November 23, 2006, age 80, Mr. Kane taught social studies at Maryvale High
School for 30 years - serving 14 years as department chairman, retiring in 1984.
He is survived by his children Kathleen K. (late Thomas) Cornell Annapolis MD,
Karen P. Kane (Ray Benedick) Atlanta, GA, Kevin T. Little Torch Key, FL and
Timothy P. Buffalo, NY.
Mr. Kane was the varsity baseball coach for 30 years, leading his teams to
numerous titles such as 15 ECIC divisional titles and 7 Section VI titles. In
1965 the Maryvale Flyers, under his coaching, won the triple ABA championship.
In 1982 his team won the Far Western championship which allowed them to go to
the state semi-finals. He was one of the first inductees to the school’s Wall of
Fame and had an annual baseball award named after him.
He was a baseball scout for the Philadelphia Phillies, Oakland A’s and
Chicago Cubs. His career as a sports official spanned almost 40 years. He
officiated at high school and college basketball and soccer games. He was
president of officiating organizations at the high school and college
levels. Mr. Kane was inducted into the Basketball Board Hall of Fame in 1993
and was awarded the soccer trophy by the WNY Soccer Board in 1974. Recently the
soccer organization also named an annual officiating award after him.
